Ha'aretz - Article
The Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz is reporting that Sharon is backing settlers in an attempt to shore up his domestic base. Now, the settlement is one issue I still don't understand all that well, but that it seems pretty clear to me that Israel is either flat wrong about or at best not acting in its own self-interest. Apparently, relations within Israel's coalition government are poor, with Sharon being pulled in incompatible directions by the left and right wing; the left unhappy that a more concilliatory tone is not being set, with the right unhappy that a more hawkish tone isn't ben set.
